Job Description

This occupation includes all positions that primarily involve performing technical work concerned with animal health in support of veterinarians or veterinary medical programs. The duties performed include inspection, quarantine, identification, collection of specimens, vaccination, appraisal and disposal of diseased animals, and disinfection for the control and eradication of infectious and communicable animal diseases. Performance of the work requires a practical knowledge of normal and certain abnormal animal health conditions, agency policy and guidelines applicable to the work, and related animal health laws and regulations.

Technical and Medical Support Positions encompass jobs that require specialized, practical knowledge and the ability to perform skilled tasked. However, these skills can often be learned on the job or through training when you are hired. In some cases, certifications are required to qualify. Additional education such as an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree will increase starting grade and lead to promotion. Typically promotions are given 1 grade at a time up to a maximum of GS-9.
