Job Description

This occupation includes positions which involve nonprofessional technical work in clinical (medical) laboratories in performing tests and examinations in one or more areas of work such as chemistry, blood banking, hematology, or microbiology. The reports of findings of tests and examinations may be used by physicians in diagnosis, care and treatment of patients, or in support of medical research. The work requires a practical knowledge of the techniques of medical laboratory practice in one or more areas of clinical laboratory work (e.g., blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology) and of the chemistry, biology and anatomy involved.

Technical and Medical Support Positions encompass jobs that require specialized, practical knowledge and the ability to perform skilled tasked. However, these skills can often be learned on the job or through training when you are hired. In some cases, certifications are required to qualify. Additional education such as an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree will increase starting grade and lead to promotion. Typically promotions are given 1 grade at a time up to a maximum of GS-9.
