However, these skills can often be learned on the job or through training when you are hired. In some cases, certifications are required to qualify. Additional education such as an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree will increase starting grade and lead to promotion. Typically promotions are given 1 grade at a time up to a maximum of GS-9.
