What are a General of the Air Force's Responsibilities?
The General of the Air Force is the five-star general rank and was the highest rank possible until it was retired. It is equivalent to the rank of General of the Army in the Army and fleet admiral in the Navy and Coast Guard. The GAF was responsible for the operations and mission of the Air Force during wartime.
No officer has ever worn the five-star rank while on active duty. This is quite different from the other services where several flag officers have indeed worn the equivalent rank. Many have argued that some positions within the Air Force such as MAJCOM commanders should have the five-star rank. However, this idea never took off and proved unnecessary in the end.
Changing situations in the future may require the reinstatement for the five-star rank though.
